Making Them Drink April 6, 2009, Monday

This past weekend we held our annual Disciple Now weekend. While it was an amazing weekend where I got to see God move in our students, it left me with one question.  How do we as leaders get people to drink the water?  After reading through the comments that our group leaders left regarding the Disciple Now,  I started thinking about how our ministry was focused on “leading our students to the water”  instead of getting them to “drink the water”.

We have focused on just simply leading them to the water.  I say this with the old saying “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink” in mind.  I have been leading them to the water and then leaving them to go and  bring another to the water to join them.  I now realize that I need to focus on making them drink.  I think it is possible to get people to drink, we just have to search for the way to do it.

It’s time we stop settling for “leading to the water” and start doing everything we can to get them to “drink the water”!

Did You Hear What They Are Doing? March 2, 2009, Monday

I was reading Philippians 1:18 this morning and noticed something that really hit me hard.  In this verse Paul is glad that the gospel is being proclaimed regardless of the motives behind that preaching.  This got me thinking about the church today and how we are so far from that mind set.  We hear what other churches are doing and look down at them, or we try to stir up problems for them.  I’m wondering if we are ever going to come around.  What is it going to take for us to realize that we are not bigger than the gospel, and we should want everyone to come into a relationship with Christ even if… gasp… it’s in another church down the street?

As a leader I pray that this is the mind set that I am not only teaching but modeling.

Presentation vs. Preparation February 17, 2009, Tuesday

Yesterday, I had to sit in staff development meetings all morning.  While I was sitting there trying to pay attention I asked myself this question: As a communicator is it more important to focus on the actual presentation or the preparation?  In my example yesterday morning the person was very knowledgeable and prepared, but her presentation, I felt, was sub par.

Let me explain what I mean.  She didn’t use a note for the 3 hours that she was talking.  Yes she had a power point to guide her but instead of using it to get the information from she pointed out what she had just talked about.  She knew her material front and back, but I couldn’t keep focused on what she was speaking about.  She never seemed to add inflection to her voice for certain points, and never really gained the crowd’s attention.  It felt like she wasn’t passionate about presenting her knowledge.

Regardless of the situation does a good communicator need to focus more on the presentation or preparation?

 Let me know your thoughts.
