Presentation vs. Preparation February 17, 2009, Tuesday

Yesterday, I had to sit in staff development meetings all morning. While I was sitting there trying to pay attention I asked myself this question: As a communicator is it more important to focus on the actual presentation or the preparation? In my example yesterday morning the person was very knowledgeable and prepared, but her presentation, I felt, was sub par.
Let me explain what I mean. She didn’t use a note for the 3 hours that she was talking. Yes she had a power point to guide her but instead of using it to get the information from she pointed out what she had just talked about. She knew her material front and back, but I couldn’t keep focused on what she was speaking about. She never seemed to add inflection to her voice for certain points, and never really gained the crowd’s attention. It felt like she wasn’t passionate about presenting her knowledge.
Regardless of the situation does a good communicator need to focus more on the presentation or preparation?
Let me know your thoughts.
